Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Amarela is unique because of two things – its vibrant local community and its lush natural environment. This is what drives the Resort’s commitment to sustainability. We at Amarela recognize that we have a responsibility to practice 3 Rs – we recycle, retain and revitalize the very resources that give us our inspiration and advantage.
Amarela is a showcase of local architecture, antiques and traditional furniture. We breathe new life into old wood by employing local artisans to transform them into furniture and artwork. We foster outstanding local artists through patronage and by setting up an Art Gallery where they can exhibit their work. We also help assist our local community development by planting flowering trees and bushes along village roads and helping restore the village chapel using resort artists and carpenters.
Amarela places great importance in energy conservation and environmental preservation. We use energy efficient lighting and solar heating, providing heated water for our bathrooms and kitchens. Our plastic waste is limited by using ceramic dispensers for our bathroom amenities. We refrained from cutting down the existing trees onsite during construction and feature them in our landscaping along with indigenous plant species. We have a garden that holds some of these local flora as well as backyard vegetables and herbs we use in our menu. We have also helped set up a community protected marine sanctuary in front of our beach. To help preserve this, Amarela does not allow motorized water sports activities or fireworks.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
We practice solid waste segregation and composting of kitchen and garden waste. Water is recycled through the rainwater collection and the installation of a Reed Bed system. This system is a form of biological wastewater treatment, turning the wastewater from our bathrooms and kitchens into reusable water for landscaping. Amarela has campaigned for the adoption of this system by establishments in the island.
